SUMMARY:L'AUDACE D'ANNETTE @ Alliance Française de Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:A photography exhibition by Lisa Barmby\nExhibition dates: 20 September –  17 October\nOpening: Friday 20 September\, 6:30pm to 8pm\nTo be officially opened by Peter Cox\, former Curator of Australian Social History at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum (Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences)\, and curator of the 2016-2018 exhibition ‘Million Dollar Mermaid: Annette Kellerman’. \nLisa Barmby’s L’Audace d’Annette (The Audacity of Annette) presents 38 elaborately staged photographs and a six-metre collage that examine the audacious life and career of Annette Kellerman (1886 – 1975). \nAs an international celebrity at the turn of the 20th Century\, Kellerman’s life as a marathon swimmer\, fearless diver\, vaudeville performer and silent movie superstar showed courage and innovation at every turn. When Annette\, competed as the only female in the Paris Seine marathon\, the crowd quickly fell in love with her\, “Allez Miss!” they shouted. She was a proto feminist\, using her physical prowess to enthral the world\, provide for her family and fearlessly pursue her dream of a new life for women. \nIn this exhibition\, Barmby\, assisted by artist Tom Alberts\, utilises multiple photographic scenes to restage and reimagine the ideas and image making of Annette Kellerman. L’Audace d’Annette traces the resonances and connections between artist and subject: the love of the sea\, the theatre\, costume design\, the cinema\, French culture\, and vegetarianism amongst many others. It is a resonant restaging taking up themes of femininity\, the body\, nature\, and social authority. Above all for Barmby\, Annette Kellerman is an inspirational woman who symbolises courage\, modern female sensibilities and friendship between Australia and France.

SUMMARY:Let Men Tremble @ Theatre Works
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Works and The Danger Ensemble Present\nLet Men Tremble\nBy The Danger Ensemble\nWorld Premiere \n14 AUGUST 2019 – 25 AUGUST 2019 \n\nContemporary and experimental theatre company The Danger Ensemble return to Theatre Works following their hugely divisive 2018 production The Hamlet Apocalypse. \nInspired by The Scarlett Letter\, a 17th century puritan romance\, Let Men Tremble throws colonial concepts of sin\, sex and the role of women in society into a modern day crucible. \nLead by award-winning Director/Designer Steven Mitchell Wright the cast of thirteen take a piece of seminal American literature and transform it into cuttingly-contemporary Australian theatre. \nLet Men Tremble is a rebellion. A revolt. A clarion call. It is a battle cry against the patriarchy\, the church and theatre itself. It is a liturgical slut drop dripping with song\, dance and theatrical madness. Get whet.

SUMMARY:AutoCannibal @ Theatre Works
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Works and Oozing Future Present\nAutoCannibal\nBy Mitch Jones\nWorld Premiere \n9 JULY 2019 – 21 JULY 2019 \n\nWhy do we do things that we know are bad for us? \nAddiction\, obesity\, corruption\, over-consumption. On all fronts homo sapiens seem to be intent on wiping themselves out through perplexingly myopic decision making. \nIn the aftermath of an apocalyptic social collapse\, one person survives – but he’s still hungry… \nDrawing together elements of circus\, performance art\, BDSM culture and clowning\, AutoCannibal is an experimental new work of solo physical theatre that explores ideas of resource depletion\, environmental exhaustion and social decay through the metaphor of the performers body. \nWhat will we eat when we’ve consumed it all? Ourselves.
