SUMMARY:Skating At St Kilda Festival
DESCRIPTION:21 June – 14 July\, 2019\nMelbourne winters mightn’t be known for their ice and snow (just yet\, anyway)\, but that doesn’t mean you can’t slide across a frozen surface in the centre of the city. The corner of Acland and Barkly streets will become a winter wonderland thanks to the return of the Skating At St Kilda Festival. \nWith the event back for another year\, all of the frosty fabulousness Melburnians know and love is back\, too: ice skating\, obviously\, but also music\, food and more. It’s the next best thing to heading to Europe when Melbourne’s at its iciest. \nEntry to the area is free\, but you’ll have to pay for all of the fun stuff\, with the fest open from 9am–9pm Monday to Wednesday and 9am–10pm Thursday to Sunday. The lineup of events includes not only regular ice skating\, but a romance-themed ‘date and skate’ night each Tuesday\, plus an ‘Ice Ice Baby’ disco evening every Thursday. \nPlease note: Skating At Australia regularly has photographers capturing all the action on the ice and there is chance you will be featured. If you are photographed and wish to have the photo removed\, please email us and we will be happy to do so immediately. \nClick here for more information. \n

SUMMARY:UNLOCKING THE DOORS and PEARL; THE JANIS JOPLIN STORY.
DESCRIPTION:Frontman RICHIE truly captures the Shamanistic energy of the legendary JIM MORRISON\, along with the hypnotic bass lines and swirling keys\, legato blues inspired guitar modality and an eclectic fusion of Jazz\, Rock and Latin drum beats\, make for the ultimate Doors experience. Unlocking the Doors are four Wollongong based musicians dedicated to capturing the magic of the live performance and sound that was unmistakably THE DOORS. \nPerforming the stories\, songs and music of the late great JANIS JOPLIN\, ANTHEA ‘JEWELS’ SIDIROPOULOS pays tribute to Janis’ legendary rock and roll historical influence and her empowering human spirit. Having performed with Janis’ band on three occasions in San Francisco\, Jewels presents the only show in Australia to be endorsed by Janis Joplin’s Estate and family\, and leaves audiences feeling like they’ve attended a concert with Janis Joplin herself. \nIs everybody in? The ceremony is about to begin…….

SUMMARY:Drive @ Theatre Works
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Works and Rebecca Meston Present\nDrive\nBy Rebecca Meston\nWorld Premiere \n6 JUNE 2019 – 15 JUNE 2019 \n\nDrive is an exploration of fallen\, deviant women set against long stretches of open road. It is inspired by the true story of former NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak\, who in 2007\, got into her car and drove non-stop 14-hours from Houston to Orlando to confront her ex-lover’s lover. Disguised in a dark wig\, glasses and trench coat\, she had in her car a knife\, mallet\, BB gun\, duct tape\, rope\, photos of women in bondage – and allegedly wore an adult nappy so that she didn’t have to stop.   \nThis new theatrical work re-imagines Lisa’s story and her 14-hour drive\, putting the spotlight on a particular kind of female implosion that’s as old as Anna Karenina and Hedda Gabler and as recent as any number of news articles about a woman\, usually in her 40s\, seemingly the image of perfection\, who suddenly snaps\, and drives her life into a ditch. Over 50 minutes\, Drive tracks the unravelling of a highly capable woman\, filled with mess\, nuance and controlled rage.   \nThe work is situated across four worlds: Space; the inside of a car; the open road; and the realm of Lisa’s imaginings. She drives\, but in the back seat of her car\, memory and fantasy come and go\, like a dark\, otherworldly version of Taxicab Confessions. The text is blended with strong choreographic elements and a richly evocative soundscape to mine the terrain of grief\, loss\, disappointment and the ways we find hope in the darkness.   \nPushing together vast galaxies with cramped\, hedged-in spaces; loneliness with unfettered desire;
and motherhood with the requirements of being an elite professional\, Drive asks the ultimate question\, how close are any of us\, at any time\, to snapping? To getting into a car and not looking back?
