SUMMARY:RAIN ROOM MELBOURNE
DESCRIPTION:Fri 9 Aug to Sun 29 Sep 2019\nRandom International’s monumental artwork Rain Room is a responsive environment engaging all the senses. \nA 100 square metre field of continuous rainfall\, Rain Room invites you to become fully immersed in the rain while simultaneously being protected from it. The millions of water droplets respond to your presence by ceasing to fall wherever you move as you navigate the space. Through Rain Room\, Random International seeks to explore how human relationships to each other and to nature are increasingly mediated through technology. \nFollowing blockbuster showings at LACMA in Los Angeles (2015/6)\, the Yuz Museum in Shanghai (2015 and 2018)\, the Museum of Modern Art\, New York (2013)\, and London’s Barbican (2012)\, this globally significant work is coming to Australia – premiering in Melbourne soon\, for a limited time only.

SUMMARY:Hola Melbourne! 2019
DESCRIPTION:13 – 29 SEPTEMBER 2019\nHola Melbourne brings you a new generation of a Latin American festival – two full weeks of interactive events where you can enjoy\, learn\, create\, and be immersed in art\, music\, literature\, film\, and ideas. \nBy 2017 4Diverse\, as a local community organisation\, had noticed the rapid growth of the Latin-American community in Port Phillip. Based on this observation\, we decided to run the Latin American Art Exhibition 2018 which took place in March 2018. \nThis event was a great opportunity for us as an organisation to connect with the local community\, and gain a sense of what is happening locally in the Latin American art scene and culture. \nThe success of the first edition of this initiative encourages us to present a wider program\, such as the:\nHOLA MELBOURNE! FESTIVAL OF LATIN AMERICAN CULTURE AND IDEAS. 2019. This program is much more ambitious regarding the range and scope. 4Diverse will create interactive performances that involve local visual artists\, musicians\, writers\, academics and dancers to actively engage the community. \nAt HOLA MELBOURNE! 2019\, we aim to make activities as inclusive as possible. We involve our audiences with artists\, and provide opportunities for people to be involved in the creation of art\, music and dance. We also offer the chance to reflect on contemporary issues related to Latin American countries and the presence of Latin American people in Australia. \nView the full program here.

SUMMARY:L'AUDACE D'ANNETTE @ Alliance Française de Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:A photography exhibition by Lisa Barmby\nExhibition dates: 20 September –  17 October\nOpening: Friday 20 September\, 6:30pm to 8pm\nTo be officially opened by Peter Cox\, former Curator of Australian Social History at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum (Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences)\, and curator of the 2016-2018 exhibition ‘Million Dollar Mermaid: Annette Kellerman’. \nLisa Barmby’s L’Audace d’Annette (The Audacity of Annette) presents 38 elaborately staged photographs and a six-metre collage that examine the audacious life and career of Annette Kellerman (1886 – 1975). \nAs an international celebrity at the turn of the 20th Century\, Kellerman’s life as a marathon swimmer\, fearless diver\, vaudeville performer and silent movie superstar showed courage and innovation at every turn. When Annette\, competed as the only female in the Paris Seine marathon\, the crowd quickly fell in love with her\, “Allez Miss!” they shouted. She was a proto feminist\, using her physical prowess to enthral the world\, provide for her family and fearlessly pursue her dream of a new life for women. \nIn this exhibition\, Barmby\, assisted by artist Tom Alberts\, utilises multiple photographic scenes to restage and reimagine the ideas and image making of Annette Kellerman. L’Audace d’Annette traces the resonances and connections between artist and subject: the love of the sea\, the theatre\, costume design\, the cinema\, French culture\, and vegetarianism amongst many others. It is a resonant restaging taking up themes of femininity\, the body\, nature\, and social authority. Above all for Barmby\, Annette Kellerman is an inspirational woman who symbolises courage\, modern female sensibilities and friendship between Australia and France.

Lying down on mats you will be saturated and cocooned in the live sounds as you enter inside the wonderful world of the sound bath. \nThe joy of a sound bath is the opportunity for you to lay\, listen deeply with your whole body and go inwards\, as you may access a consciousness that lies between sleeping and waking. Here you may be transported to states of stillness\, meditation\, bliss\, altered states of awareness\, and self-healing. Sound bath participants variously report powerful bodily sensations and brain states often accompanied by creative thought\, rich imagery\, insights\, and feelings of rest and timelessness. This unique composition of frequencies and harmonics produces a soundscape that washes over you\, with the intention to release bodily tension and produce a relaxation response lowering stress\, cortisol and adrenaline levels. We invite you to explore new ways of listening and responding\, as the ear hears\, the brain listens and the body senses vibrations.

SUMMARY:Let Men Tremble @ Theatre Works
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Works and The Danger Ensemble Present\nLet Men Tremble\nBy The Danger Ensemble\nWorld Premiere \n14 AUGUST 2019 – 25 AUGUST 2019 \n\nContemporary and experimental theatre company The Danger Ensemble return to Theatre Works following their hugely divisive 2018 production The Hamlet Apocalypse. \nInspired by The Scarlett Letter\, a 17th century puritan romance\, Let Men Tremble throws colonial concepts of sin\, sex and the role of women in society into a modern day crucible. \nLead by award-winning Director/Designer Steven Mitchell Wright the cast of thirteen take a piece of seminal American literature and transform it into cuttingly-contemporary Australian theatre. \nLet Men Tremble is a rebellion. A revolt. A clarion call. It is a battle cry against the patriarchy\, the church and theatre itself. It is a liturgical slut drop dripping with song\, dance and theatrical madness. Get whet.
